I looked at kinetic type when I was planning on adding some in. I was inspired by how they can be turned on their side, with added graphics/effects with different sizes. This is initially what I wanted to do.

After presenting my pitch there was a mix of feedback which was actually very helpful.
People liked the fact that I was ending my speech on something different than 'I have a dream'. I have ended it on The ''Free at last'' quote. I did this because this leads on from the most powerful part of the speech in my opinion.
Another positive is that the class liked the fact that I'm not going to use music as everyone else is. However this has changed and I have said why In earlier blogs but mainly because of the atmosphere this creates.
After telling them in my pitch about the coin, they said to use an American one however I couldn't get my hands on one which is a shame.
I was going to use kinetic type but with all my other footage it just didn't fit in with what I wanted to achieve. Instead I used original footage of the speech to create the same effect of emphasising the spoken words instead of text on screen.
One last thing people mentioned is the clock. Maybe it was in my video too much. I disagree and I have accomplished what I wanted with it ticking away in every clip which I speeded up.

This is the ending part of my video summarising MLK with his name, his date of birth and death. I used Motion to create this and added a Text Behaviour to the text as if its being typed out. I did this because I feel its appropriate to see every letter being typed out. I made sure the first line came first followed by the second. I did struggle with us as I feel alien to using Motion. This is how it looks. I choose black and white as his speech was all about fighting for rights. I choose a simple typeface with was very illegible just very sharp and clear. However in my video It has come out slightly blury for some reason.
Evaluation
After selecting my new part of the speech I began to film. I wanted to film abstract and nothing too literal as the brief says. However I filmed a few places where I thought I could give the viewer of the period in time of when the speech was given. This was March, 1963. I firstly managed to film my first idea which was the train track which looks directly into point blank/ongoing view. I thought I would do this because it replicates where MLK gave the speech in Washington. Its narrow and seems to go on forever in the distance just like the train track. This was difficult because I was trying to find the balance between not being too literal taking actual shots of whats being said or further more what was actually on the footage itself. One of the other ideas I had was to convey freedom. I know I could capture some shots of an open area but I wanted more than that. I captured a bird that is in my final video as it's flying away whilst I'm zooming into it and I feel this gives a great effect. This clip is only short as there is no need for it to be any longer. The days in which I filmed were very dull which worked to my advantage as I needed cloudy skies and landscape to give a feeling of depression and sadness. A different idea I had was right from the start. I wanted to film an old fashioned alarm clock for around 1 minute or how long the selected speech was. One of the things I noticed every time I listened to my selected part of the speech is that I feel like an explosion is about happen. Something drastic. This is because Martin Luther King over this short period of time raises his voice with passion when he says we won't be living in a time of poverty and sadness. I went on to film a clock for 1 minute. When It came to adding this to my video I decided to cut it up into parts according to how far along the speech is. So for the first shot of the clock which is shot 5 or 6, the second hand moves for 5 seconds. I speeded this up so in fact the length of the clip is in fact about 1 second. I went on to do this adding more clips of the clock throughout where I thought appropriate carrying on from where the second hand left off in the last clip. I felt like this was effective as I said I felt like a bomb was going to go off the time I heard all the speech as you could hear it building up in his voice. This counts in his body language too when you watch the actual footage. After looking for a a real alarm clock with ringing bells on top of it I couldn't find one anywhere so I used my own. I feel this a let down to my video as when in the final clip of the clock I wanted the bells to ring after 1 minute as the end. This would also of tied in with what I said about 'only a matter of time' then they would of been set off. I feel the parts when he says racism wont continue and he wont stop fighting until it does stop makes this ever so powerful. You can tell he's determined and strong. I knew from the beginning as soon as his voice rises knowing he wont be backed down I visually had to accompany this with something striking/meaningful. I heading down to the sea on a windy day to capture a hard crashing wave against some rocks. After waiting for some time I managed to capture a huge clash against the wall which was perfect. This part accompanies the part when MLK says ''When all of God's children, black men and white men'' etc. This is because The ''All'' part is so ferocious and hits you hard and I could only think of one thing to symbolise this being a wave as for me, it also represents their passion for freedom. I used a coin to symbolise motion, movement and again, a build up in what I call until this 'bomb' goes off. I liked the way I used very short clips to keep the viewer interested. This is not only with the coin but most of my other filmed footage too. As the brief says, to give a 'flavour' of the speech. I continued to film but most importantly used some original footage of Martin giving his speech. I feel this gives a unique twist to my video using my own film clips too. I overlapped this with a self shot clip of a puddle when it was raining really hard. I feel this visual backed up what he was saying. He said, ''When let it ring every state, and every city''. As of all of the speech I chose he 'dreams' about America and it's rights. The clip after the crashing wave is to me the most powerful part of all where he says ''Free at last, free at last, God almighty, we are free at last''. I filmed a lighters flame and placed it behind the MLK speech and i feel this was effective. This is because his voice almost felt and sounded spiritual. It almost reminded me of a ritual so this is how I came about that idea. At the end I have a few lines in which I used Apple Motion to create some text.
Successes In my video I feel is firstly learning Final Cut and producing a video but some of it's tools as well. I used tools such as increasing/decreasing opacity levels to over lap clips as I said above. I also enjoyed playing around with the speed in which the clips can edit that. I was playing a game with trial and error whilst making this video and I am proud of what I have achieved.
A lot of people have emphasised what has been said in their speech by adding music and kinetic text. I tried this but It didn't work for me and what I wanted to accomplish. However after an ongoing search I found something in which I think fits perfectly. This because I felt the music added elements of creativity and inspiration. It is relaxing piano music gradually building up, just as Martin's speech. Something which I feel made it is when he says ''Free at last, free at last God almighty free at last'' I actually cut out the music to emphasis this part, fading it out. Then after I faded another part in with more depth and power accompanying the last clock shot and the text which I created in Apple Motion at the end. The original footage I used of MLK delivering his speech acted as a replacement for kinetic text emphasising the spoken words. This is because the footage actually does this too so I wanted to give it a twist.

I have done some re-search of Martin Luther king kinetic text but as of yet I have not really found anything appropriate that can influence me. I still am unsure of kinetic text will be part of my video.
Here are my storyboard;
Here are my storyboard;
These were my first storyboards and some aspects have changed but I will put the most up to date one in my sketchbook. As you can see in the storyboard I've tried to create a painful, hard atmosphere to resemble the first part of the chosen speech. Please note my chosen part of the speech has changed since not knowing we could split it up. I had flames, empty rooms, rain, dark weather and sun sets. These were all to represent pain and wellbeing. I planned on doing this by going out myself and filming these proposals guaranteed I had appropriate weather/light etc.
The bottom storyboard shows a new beginning, as the second half of the speech I was focusing on did too. It shows sun, elegance, happiness etc. On the forth box I wrote 'MLK speech' meaning I want part of the footage of his speech in my video too. This still remains in my current plans. As I said in an earlier blog post, I have my coin next showing motion and movement.
I have a rough storyboard of my proposed video elements and I wish to film almost all of this myself. This is because I want to be creative in a way that I am not using original footage of the speech itself but going out and filming for myself.
I have rough ideas and they are as follows;
My chosen part of the speech is 1 minute long so I plan to film a clock face for 1 minute and add small clips of the clock with the seconds ticking past. I am planning on doing this to give a feeling of leading up to something, almost like a digital timer on a bomb. Its only a matter of time until it explodes and I am trying to include this factor but turn into a way in which it fits in with my video and the time period of the 1960's. I shall hopefully be placing these clock clips over the top of other video footage with different opacity levels.
Another is I want to resemble pain in appropriate parts of the speech by filming flames from a fire whilst also using the same idea for the clock, by overlapping this footage with others. I may film a bonfire/fireplace or use a lighter.
I want to create motion, movement and the fact that this speech will turn America around. Martin Luther King does this by enhancing his voice, making it louder, more up tempo. I want to re-create this visually by taking an American coin and film it flipping, falling, turning in any movement to resemble this.
When selecting this part of the speech one of the first things I noticed was when we says ''When all of god's children'' (then continues to go on to say black men and white men, jews, gentiles etc) his voice very dramatically picks up in passion and becomes so much louder. Like an explosion has happened. I want to visually make this happen but not literally an explosion but to show some kind of impact of change. I don't have many ideas how i could do this yet but I have thought of filming a rough sea wave crashing into a rock or something just as his voice picks up but this idea is no final idea as of yet.

My newly selected part of the speech is now 15.22 - END. This is because I mainly wanted to avoid the cliche of the I have a dream quotes as others are doing that part and it is the most well known part of the speech itself. My my selected part he continues to say how he will let freedom ring and repeats this a lot which i find very passionate and powerful.
Here is the text; Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!
Here is the text; Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"
I have highlighted in Bold the statements which i feel give great impact on the speech itself and these are the main aspects I want to focus on when producing my film.

After my idea getting totally destroyed I'm thinking of using the last minute and half ish of speech as I think It's still as powerful and passionate.
It's just such a shame that I had an idea of including different parts of the speech since as it starts as dark moving into a lighter mood I thought I could create some great visuals with that. It isn't in the brief that the section of the speech had to be in one whole block.
I'm now having to re-think my idea/storyboard to fit the newly selected speech segment.

Even after pitching my idea to the whole class with my proposed selected part of the speech no one mentioned that it had to be one continuous block instead of breaking it up like I have done.
I've only just realised and been told this which has ruined my storyboard and plan for my video. I have a crit monday and have only just been told this so now I have to begin right from the start...

I have recently pitched for this Project and I have mainly received positive feedback.
I spoke about his background, his past history of being a national figure and how he wanted racial equality through a non-violence protest. I thought he was a great man who stood up for black people not only in the US but all over the world. He never gave up for his fight to freedom.
I then outlined the speech which i thought was most powerful, most enthusiastic, passionate part. I already had an idea about how I wanted to the speech to be edited. This is splitting the speech in half as the first half is dark, talks about slavery and racists then lightens up as we go further down the speech. This includes King speaking about rights, freedom saying how everyone is equal. This part of the speech would be know where as forceful without his raise in voice. It gets much louder, you can almost feel anger in it. The speech really made an impact for me as how he made it personal for himself. The quote is as follows;
''I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character''.
For me this is what won me over any of the other speeches as it is so strong.

The first half of the speech is not as powerful as it doesn't necessarily need to be. I have got 3 main parts for each half of my selected speech and they are as follows;
First half,
''But 100 years later the negro, is still not free''
''The Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later''
''Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time''
Second half,
''I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character, I have a dream today''
''One day down there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers, I have a dream today''
''We will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: "Free at last! Free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!''

I was fairly unfamiliar with all speeches and they are as follows;
Franklin D Roosevelt: The only thing we have to fear is fear itself
Winston Churchill: We shall fight them on the beaches
Harold Macmillan: The wind of change
Nelson Mandela: An ideal for which I'm prepared to die
Jawahharal Nahru: A tryst with destiny
John F Kennedy: As not what your country can do for you
Martin Luther King: I have dream
Margaret Thatcher: The lady's not for turning
Earl Spencer: The most hunted person of the modern age
I was most familiar with Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, John F kennedy and Martin Luther King.
The reason I choose King over everyone else is mainly due to pure power of his speech which in my opinion, rules over the others.
